Textiles For Ceremony and Practice

Civara – the Sanskrit term for the robe of a committed practitioner – takes a different form in every tradition that wears it. The weight, dimensions, color, and its pattern are not decorative choices but often lineage requirements, each with its own logic and history.

Our Monastic Robes Were Born From a Special Offering

In 2016 the first group of Tibetan nuns earned the Geshema Degree, equivalent to a doctorate (Ph.D.) in Tibetan Buddhist philosophy,  after nearly two decades of preparation. His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the monks of the Namgyal Monastery in Dharamsala sought a unique offering to honor this monumental event.

Our hand-loomed tight weave Pashmina monastic robe was created to serve that unique purpose.

Restoring Tradition

Written over a millennium ago, the Nīlamata Purāṇa documents Kashmiri craftsmen weaving Cīvara – monastic robes – for the Śākya Buddhist community.

verse 714: “The Śākyas should be honoured with Cīvara, food and books.”

Cīvara Workshop continues this tradition today, in Srinagar, by hand.
